Inspire Joins the B Corp Movement

B Corps are dedicated to one unified goal: redefining what success means in business.

A few years ago, we made it our mission to inspire a connected movement of people towards a brighter energy future. Today, we’ve made profound progress in achieving this mission. We are proud to share that Inspire recently earned its B Corporation (B Corp) Certification. The “B” stands for benefit, which represents a global movement of leaders that uses business as a force for good. Similar to a Fair Trade or LEED certification, it signals that we’re committed to making an environmental and social difference, safeguarding people and the planet, and meeting higher standards of transparency, performance, and accountability.

We are joining a diverse community of over 2,200 B Corp certified organizations across 150 industries, dedicated to one unified goal: redefining what success means in business. We believe that it takes a connected movement to truly solve some of our most important global problems and accelerate sustainability efforts. It’s an honor to be in good company with purpose-driven leaders like Patagonia, Etsy, The Honest Company, and Warby Parker.

Inspire was born out of a strong desire to disrupt the antiquated energy category. Our founder and CEO, Patrick Maloney, set out to build the kind of energy company he hoped to see in the world—one that strives to make every home a smart home, powered by clean energy.

“We’ve always wanted Inspire to be a catalyst for global change, driving massive progress towards a brighter energy future,” says Patrick. “Becoming part of the B Corp movement allows us to collaborate with like-minded organizations as we work tirelessly to bring our mission to life.”

B Lab, the nonprofit organization that certifies and supports B Corporations, looks for the companies that compete not only to be the best in the world, but the Best for the World. B Lab conducted a rigorous certification evaluation on Inspire, and determined that we met its comprehensive social and environmental performance standards. As a sustainable business, being socially and environmentally responsible is core to everything that we do. We hold ourselves to a higher standard for our employees, partners, customers, local communities, and world.

“We’re solving important consumer problems with technology products that are inherently good for our planet,” says Chris Brereton, our VP of Product. “This certification signals that now more than ever, we’re committed to being the best—and building the best—for our employees, our customers, and the world.”

Public transparency is an important standard for all B Corps. To uphold it, we’re sharing some of the reasons why we became certified. We’ve amended our corporate governing documents to require the consideration of employees, community, and the environment—this legally binds and holds us accountable to our social and environmental mission. Because our products are naturally good for the environment, we were recognized for reducing 296,360 metric tons of greenhouse gas from going into the atmosphere in 2017 alone—which is equivalent to stopping 324,245,442 pounds of coal from being burned. One of our core company values, ‘Own It’, embodies our bootstrap mentality, and almost all employees are given the opportunity for financial ownership. We take culture very seriously, and recently became Great Place to Work certified.

Beyond cultural perks, we aspire to improve the daily lives and well-being of our employees, including options to work remote, and flexible time off policies. And we’re incredibly proud to support sustainability education through Do The Bright Thing (DTBT), which is empowering future leaders through education and mentorship.

“This is only the beginning,” continued Patrick. “We have a tremendous opportunity to scale as a sustainable company and enhance the power of Inspire across the globe.”
